kass: "Judaism is my other fandom." (judaism)
[personal profile] kass posting in [community profile] stilljewish
Welcome to the new incarnation of stilljewish! Your friendly moderators, [personal profile] batdina and [personal profile] kass, are happy to have you aboard.

Below the cut: a ton of information about the community. Who we are, what we're here for, what we'll be talking about over the next year, and more!

ABOUT US:

This community is a space for fannish Jews and Jewish fans to discuss the intersection of Judaism and fandom in our lives. For now, we're limiting membership in the community to people who fit that description. (If you self-define as a fannish Jew or Jewish fan, you're welcome here. We're not interested in policing the boundaries of either Jewishness or fannishness.) We take our name from a line delivered by Willow Rosenberg (on Buffy the Vampire Slayer), in the season three episode "Amends:"

Buffy: "What are you doing for Christmas?"
Willow: "Being Jewish. Remember, people? Not everybody worships Santa."
(Later in the episode:)
Xander: "That's the Christmas spirit."
Willow: "Hello? Still Jewish. Hanukkah spirit, I believe that was."

This should go without saying, but we'll say it anyway: no attacks on anyone else's form(s) of Jewishness or fannishness will be tolerated. There are as many ways to be Jewish and fannish as there are Jews and fans. We're hoping that this comm will attract Jews of every variety and fans of every stripe, and we want to make this a safe place for all of us.

"Safe" doesn't necessarily mean that your views or ideas won't be challenged. We hope that they will! We look forward to all sorts of discussion, and we assume that our conversations here will feature a variety of voices and perspectives. That's not a bug, it's a feature.

Our ground rules are pretty simple. Try to be a mensch. No ad hominem attacks. No antisemitism. Steer clear of racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism, and so on. And try not to leap immediately to defensiveness if other members of the comm perceive any of those things where you do not.

As noted above, at this point in time the comm is open only to Jews. Membership is moderated, which means you need to apply to join; once you join, you'll be able to read posts, make posts, and comment on posts. We're going to start off with posts locked to community members, which means that if you're not part of the community, you won't see the posts. We may change that at some future date, or we may not; we'll see how things go! This intro post will remain unlocked.

In general both moderators tend to operate on the theory that we're all capable of having rational adult discussions, but we reserve the right to deny membership to anyone who we know has acted inappropriately in other similar communities, and we reserve the right to boot anyone who acts inappropriately here. We hope we won't have to do that, though.

WHAT WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT STUFF:

Judaism and fandom, of course!

In the previous incarnation of this community over on livejournal, there was a flood of conversation when the comm was first founded but then posts and comments petered out. We've given some thought to how to keep the conversation flowing, and here's our plan: during the first year of the comm's existence on dreamwidth, we're going to launch twelve discussion topics, one each month. (A list of those topics follows.)

Y'all are also welcome to start discussion threads at any time; we want to keep discussion flowing, but we don't want to limit conversation to our own ideas of what's worth discussing! If there's something you want to talk about, post away. At the end of the first year we'll evaluate how this has worked and whether we want to maintain the same strategy the following year.

Here are the 12 topics we're planning to dive into over the next year:

  • Favorite fictional Jewish characters: tell us who you love, in any fandom at all (links, pimping, and picspams welcome!)

  • Jews in RPF fandoms: Adam Lambert and beyond

  • Jews in comics & comics fandom (Jewish characters, Jewish creators, Jewish subtext, Jewish comics fans)

  • Jews in non-English-language fannish sources (including but not limited to Israeli movies and TV)

  • Jews and the Supernatural (including but not limited to the tv show of that name)

  • Favorite Jewish fanworks (fanfiction, fanart, vids, meta, etc): share links and reviews of your own work or someone else's! All fandoms welcome!

  • Being "out" (or not) -- as a fan in your Jewish life, as a Jew within fandom

  • Identity politics: (how) do we, as Jewish fans, participate in fannish conversations about privilege and identity?

  • Authenticity: what does it take for books/shows/etc to portray us right? ("us" = either Jews or fans or both)

  • Ways of being Jewish at fannish cons, and being fannish at Jewish gatherings

  • A New Song: Jews and filking

  • It's Not Just Us: connecting with other non-Christian fans (Eid_Fic et al)

Again: this is not meant to be an exhaustive or restrictive list! It's just a dozen subjects we thought would spark interesting conversations. Feel free to make other (on-topic) posts anytime.

NOW WHAT?

We are now open for membership! So if you're interested, please join. (Remember that membership is moderated, and your mods are not online every moment of the day, so it may take a while for us to approve your membership; thanks for bearing with us.) Soon we'll make an introductions post, where folks can introduce themselves in comments, and then we'll be off and running!

We'll launch a new discussion topic each month sometime close to Rosh Chodesh (new moon, e.g. the start of a new month on the Jewish calendar.)

Feel free to pimp this comm in your own journal.

If you want to join the comm but don't have a dreamwidth account, check out [site community profile] dw_codesharing -- someone there will almost certainly be able to give you an account code.

If you have questions which this post hasn't answered, feel free to drop them as comments and we'll do our best to answer them.
